Lined Paper for Handwriting Practice

What this worksheet is

This free printable lined paper uses the classic three-line rule: a solid baseline, a dashed midline, and a top line. Letters sit at a consistent height. Print as many blank pages as you need for handwriting practice.

The dashed midline does the heavy lifting. It shows learners how high lowercase letters should reach (the x-height) and where ascenders and capitals go. Ordinary ruled paper gives you none of that.

This paper suits everyone from pre-K writers forming their first letters to adults tidying an everyday hand. Beginners write large and let the guides do the coaching; older kids and adults use the same rule to shrink and even out their writing. Once letter size and placement stay steady without guides, often around second or third grade, regular notebook paper is the natural next step.

Teachers keep a stack of this paper at the writing center because it fits almost any task: spelling tests, sentence copywork, journal starters, and letter-formation drills all benefit from the same guides. At home it pairs well with any of our tracing sheets. After a child traces an alphabet page, or a name sheet from the Name Tracing Generator, hand over this blank paper and ask for the same letters unaided. That trace-then-blank step shows you what has actually stuck.

If a child ignores the lines, give them kid-friendly names. Many teachers call the space between the baseline and the midline the grass, the space above it the sky, and the area below the baseline the dirt, so a letter g has roots in the dirt and an h reaches into the sky. Naming the zones turns letter placement from an abstract rule into a picture a young child can hold onto.

How to use it

1. Print as many copies of the PDF as you need on US Letter paper.
2. Write lowercase letters between the baseline and the dashed midline.
3. Let ascenders (b, d, h, k, l) and capitals reach the top line.
4. Drop descenders (g, j, p, q, y) just below the baseline.

Quick tips

• Hold it against a window or lightbox to trace any text you like.
• It works well for spelling practice, copywork, and letter formation drills.
• For a beginner, run a yellow highlighter along the space between the baseline and the midline. It shows exactly where the small letters live.
• Left-handed writers smudge less with the page rotated clockwise about 30 degrees, so the hand sits below the line of writing.
• Slide a page into a plastic sleeve for dry-erase warm-ups, and save printed copies for work you want to keep and compare over time.
